Retirement: Many people dream of the day when they will not have the stress or daily demands from their employer, customers and colleagues. For some, the work is not satisfying or it is just not a pleasant environment to work in. No matter the reason, most people only focus on when they can retire and think they will be happy in their retirement years.
Maybe the focus should be on what you will do during retirement. If you believe retirement is the answer for you, and it could be, how will you spend your retirement years?
Will you play golf every day or go fishing 4 days a week? Will you confine yourself to your living room or front porch rocking chair? These are great and enjoyable things to do, but they can get old quick! Every day of retirement does not have to be planned to perfection, but one does need to have something purposeful and fulfilling to do. This could be continuing to work part time or volunteering with one or two non-profit organizations or your church. Finding your passion and where you can make a difference is the key.
It could be something as simple as helping your neighbors. When my grandfather retired he bought a new lawnmower and maintained the yards of five widows on his street at no cost (Of course, with my grandmother’s supervision). He also got more active in his community.
Spending more time with family, especially grandchildren, can also be important. However, they have school, activities, and their own friends, so the time they can give you may be limited.
No matter when you decide to retire, or not to retire, make sure that it is for the right reason and not just because you can.
Continue to live an active, meaningful, and purpose driven life!
