Euro Area in Recession Since Third Quarter of 2011
The Centre for Economic Policy Research, the European agency who officially dates recessions and expansions, declared that the Euro Area has been in recession since the 3rd Quarter of 2011. Their official release date was November 15, 2012.
The ECRI, from whom we buy economic data, has been signaling that the Euro Area was in a recession for quite a while. We have communicated this information to our clients as we have received it. The fact that Europe has been in recession for the past year does not guarantee that the US will experience recession, but the ECRI believes the odds are high that the US is experiencing recessionary levels of economic activity. If the ECRI is correct about US growth, then at some point in the next 6-12 months we would expect the National Bureau of Economic Research to make an official declaration for the US.
